Safe Space Burlesque Lesson with Peekaboo Pointe
Safe Space Burlesque Lesson with Peekaboo Pointe
Come learn the art of Burlesque in this very special evening workshop with professional dancer, Peekaboo Pointe.
We’ll begin the evening with zero proof cocktails while we warm up and get to know each other. Then it’s onto the bump and grind! Peekaboo will guide you through the basics of burlesque movement as we tap into our authentic sensuality. She might even throw in a little lap dancing at the end just to spice it up.
By the end of the night you’ll strut away with everything you need to put on your own private show this Valentine’s Day, whether you’re looking to spice your routine up with your partner or ready to attract some fresh talent. You’ll also leave with a bespoke grotto goodie bag.
This class will take place from 7-10PM at the Mark Morris Dance Center in Fort Greene: 3 Lafayette Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11217. No prior dance experience is required.
About Peekaboo: You might recognize her as the talented, tassel-swinging performer from our coven Halloween party, but Peekaboo is an interdisciplinary performance artist, video artist, stripper, burlesque performer and choreographer. She received an MFA in Performance and Interactive Media Art from Brooklyn College in 2019. Peekaboo has created a body of work that can co-exist in both traditional performance spaces and the world of nightlife entertainment. In addition to being a proud stripper and headlining in burlesque in nightclubs and festivals around the world, she creates interdisciplinary multimedia dance theater that has been shown at HERE Arts, Dixon Place, Wild Project, and others, including her full-length show Yes, Please (2022) that featured sex workers as collaborative art makers. She choreographed and performed in Taylor Mac’s A 24 Decade History of Popular Music, nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama (2017) and is a dancer for the revolutionary punk band, Pussy Riot.
As a burlesque headliner she toured Australia, Canada, South Africa and across the US. Peekaboo self produced multiple international 6 week tours across Europe and South Africa, and has even performed in China and Russia. She was a guest artist in Vive le Cabaret at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and joined the long running French Cabaret show Cabaret New Burlesque. She was a cast member in the long running New York City shows: This is Burlesque with Murray Hill (2007-9) which ran 4 shows a week; and Guilty Pleasures (2006-7) and toured with Lucha Vavoom. Currently, she is a resident performer at The Slipper Room (2003-present), Bathtub Gin, and the legendary Duane Park (2008-present). She has been listed on 21st Century Burlesque’s Top 50 Most Influential Burlesque performers list for five years, has won seven Golden Pasties, and has had the honor of performing at The Burlesque Hall of Fame nine times.
As an MFA student, Peekaboo began creating stop-motion videos that allow her a platform to explore mediated representations of her thought-provoking performance art. She continues to perform as a featured burlesque dancer while exploring similar themes of sexuality, compassion, and subjecthood in her films. Her work explores intimacy by subverting the expectations of the viewer and using her body as a tool to explore larger topics of gender, sexuality, sex work, and feminism with playful humor sprinkled in.
Peekaboo Pointe is the subject of several documentaries, including Play Me Burlesque and Getting Naked, and has been featured on the podcasts Look Down There and The Manwhore as well as publications such as the Washington Post, Wall St. Journal and Cosmopolitan. She is a regular guest teaching artist at New York University, and has taught classes and workshops around the globe. Her video art has been presented at the Jean Cocteau Cinema and the NMSU Art Museum.
